For women over 30, dating can be a minefield. There are fewer single people generally, and yes, there will be some men your age specifically seeking out younger women. We live in a society that worships at the altar of youth — particularly when it comes to women. Indeed, because women have primarily been valued for their beauty, a concept deeply rooted in ideas of youth, women are socially devalued as they get older.
These deeply gendered value systems normalise older men seeking out younger women, because if we value men for what they acquire, and treat women as objects, of course some men are going to view women as another symbol of their status, and want the most desirable model. Everyone has a learning curve, and just like you, most people want to be bowled over by someone amazing.
You could be that person. Younger men who have grown up around discourse around gender equality may indeed be impressed, rather than intimidated, by all you have to offer. Dating As a 40-Year-Old Single Parent
This story was originally published on Dec. I decided I wanted a divorce when my twin daughters were 3 weeks old. The break was cleaner than the marriage had been, like ripping off a Band-Aid. We separated, I filed for divorce, and the three of us never saw him again.
I was 20 years old and wanted to find someone to share my life with that would also want to be a father to the twins. I’ve been in a few relationships trying to find.
Despite my wish for a personal life, my children have always remained my number one priority, and I refuse to loosen my grip on that, to compromise their emotional security so I can meet my own or someone else’s selfish needs. Here’s the truth: dating while divorcing with young kids is complicated. It’s complicated, and messy, and full of panicky meltdowns where you turn the manual sideways and wonder if you’re actually doing it all wrong.
But surprisingly, despite the enormous amount of people in this position, my recent Google searches on dating with kids post-divorce have turned up next to nothing on the subject. There are lots of lists, of course, indicating the appropriate time to introduce your new partner to your children and how to do so smoothly. But I couldn’t find any brutally honest testimonials describing the way to be both a single mom and a girlfriend without screwing everything and everyone up in the process.
I should probably start by saying I believe whole-heartedly that there is nothing wrong with dating when you have kids. The best mom is a happy one, and if you meet someone who can contribute to your life and bring joy to it, then have at it.
